Ross Lovegrove Ross Lovegrove
Edra, Italy, 2000

Ross Lovegrove was born in 1958 in Cardiff, Wales. He is sometimes known as “Captain Organic” for the obvious influence of biology on his work. Lovegrove studied at Manchester Polytechnic and graduated with a First Class BA in Industrial Design in 1980. He then attended the Royal College of Art in London where he completed his master of design. His impressive resume includes Walkmans for Sony, computers for Apple, and furniture for Knoll.

Check out Ross Lovegrove’s website here, then a 2006 interview with Designboom and a 2007 interview with Wallpaper*.  From there, watch these videos.

Ross Lovegrove’s TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) lecture “The power and beauty of organic design” (2005).   From the TED site, why you should listen to him:

He is truly a pioneer of industrial design. As founder of Studio X in the Notting Hill area of London, the Welsh-born designer has exuberantly embraced the potential offered by digital technologies. However, he blends his love of high tech with a belief that the natural world had the right idea all along. Many of his pieces are inspired by principles of evolution and microbiology.

Designspotter TV meets Ross Lovegrove at Cologne Design Week, Cologne (2009).
