Zimku wireless speaker system | Philippe Starck | Parrot, France | 2009

Zodiac mirror | Unknown designer | Finesse Originals, United States of America | 1970s (?)

Another example of the maximalist designs of Finesse Originals.  This large mirror is  are made of fiberglass and resin with a sturdy metal frame. My post of May 5, 2010 focused on a similar mirror by Finesse I called the “Poseidon.”  The theme of this mirror is the zodiac.

It is large and was difficult to ship at 4 1/2 inches thick at its thickest and 38 inches across at its widest.  It weighs in at about 30 pounds (almost 14 kg).  The combination of weight and size made this piece prohibitively expensive to ship via UPS or other traditional carrier.  Fortunately there is  a Greyhound station within a few miles of my house so this was a terrific option.

Above is a picture of the back of the Zodiac mirror.  Visible is the mirror backing, the metal support ring, and the hanger, which is very sturdy.  Just to make sure, I put two 100 lb hangers (shown at right) in my wall about six inches apart to support the structure. 100 lb picture hanger

Poseidon mirror | Unknown designer | Finesse Originals, United States of America | 1970s (?)

I don’t think it’s any exaggeration to say that wall art was pretty big back in the day.  Some of the pieces produced by Finesse Originals are the most impressive – and over the top - I’ve come across.  Totally maximalist design.  If you know anything about Finesse Originals, please comment!  No idea on the date, but I’m guessing late 1960s to early 1970s.

I finally have one of these mirrors hanging in my room after seeing it a few years ago.  It’s not the Poseidon, the one I have I’ll share in the next post.  These mirrors are unwieldy and difficult to ship.  This one is 30 pounds, 43 inches in diameter and 10 inches deep.  It is a two part frame, with a metal base and fiberglass and resin relief.  The mirror is antiqued.  It has a mottled appearance and this is natural and original to the pieces.Poseidon mirror, Finesse OriginalsThe mirror was described as being a “Large mirror depicting mythological Poseidon with Hippocampi”

Large and elaborate fantasy mirror comprised of mythical Greco-Roman figures. Features Poseidon/Neptune, god of the sea, brandishing his trident and surrounded by a herd of hippocampi, the "seahorses" of ancient mythology. The perimeter of the mirror is embellished with stylized waves, representing Poseidon's mastery of the seas, and possibly his frustration with the goddess he is pursuing. The cast resin frame is gilt finished and antiqued. Signed “Finesse Originals.”

Unfortunately, it’s been sold and I didn’t get a look at the price, which I would imagine would have been in the high three figures from a retail antique store.
