Quadrat soap-dish | Hammarplast | Sweden

Here is a Quadrat soap-dish made by Hammarplast, Sweden.  While it was sold as a soap dish, pictures in the literature that accompany the dish show other possibilities. You might expect the focus of this product to be the bathroom, but it seems in fact that the target focus is the kitchen!  The dish itself is large, at 6” by 6” square.  It features a ring and a bowl shaped protrusion for storage in which fits a chrome plated holder.

One picture in the accompanying literature shows a more traditional, side by side use with the caption, “White looks clean and fresh.”

Another picture from the literature shows a 5 by 5 array of the soap dish, with them being used for all kinds of storage.  When arranged this way, the series of pockets serve as a wall storage unit.

The caption on the picture reads: The opposite of a standard kitchen.  An exclusive, entirely white kitchen with only Quadrat as a decorative element, apart from the fixed fittings and furniture.

6906 Brown Rabbit | Don Featherstone | Union Products, Inc. | Leominster, Massachusetts, United States | 1993

Spring is springing, and it’s time for Easter.  Here is the model 6906 Brown Rabbit (although I like chocolate bunny better) by Union Products.  It looks sweet enough to take a bite out of! Union is well known for its blow molded plastic designs, and Don Featherstone for his design creation.  Image source: eBay.  This like new pair sold for $195 on March 16.

The decoration is 31” in height.  A small light bulb fixture attached to a cord can be inserted through a hole in the bottom, but the plastic is so dark, not much could possibly shine through.  The illumination shows up much better on the white version than the chocolate brown. UPC Code: 0 78304 69060 9.

The pieces are signed “Don Featherstone” on the side of the base. Donald “Don” Featherstone is most widely known for his 1957 plastic pink flamingo, also created during his long tenure at Union Products, where he would eventually become President. Featherstone grew up in Berlin, Massachusetts. After graduating from the Worcester Art Museum’s art school, he was offered a job designing three-dimensional animals for Union Products, Inc. Featherstone eventually sculpted over 750 different items for Union Products.  In 1957, he was asked to design a flamingo. The

now iconic pink flamingo went on sale in 1958.  Read Pretty in Pink: Flamingos give color to Leominster for more information about Don Featherstone.

plastic animals | Don Manning | Nosco Plastics, Pennsylvania, United States

Nosco Plastics, Inc. (often abbreviated as NOSCO) was the plastics molding division of National Organ Supply Company.  The division was created in 1934 to make plastic parts for electric organs and was located in Pennsylvania.  Beginning in 1948, NOSCO employed a new screw injection molding process that was used to manufacture huge quantities of cheap, small plastic toys.  These toys, called “slum” were used as party favors, drink markers, carnival merchandise, and Cracker Jack prizes.

According to plastic toy historian and author Bill Hanlon, the Don Manning Studio was operating in New York City prior to the start of World War II. Manning contributed highly stylized, fantastical art deco impressions of a menagerie of animals.  While this particular post is specifically about  horses, there are many others that will be a part of future posts.  Some pieces are unmarked, some are marked “U.S.A.”, some are marked “DON MANNING” and some of the larger pieces are marked “DESIGNED BY DON MANNING”.

I previously posted about a “Stylized mustang horse brooch pin” that is clearly a Manning design.  Based on what I have seen, it looks like the pin back might have been added later.  Most of the small and mid-sized NOSCO/Manning animals would probably work well as a pin.  Below are the rearing stylized horses in two different sizes.
